While oil lights and candles are considered to be 'teh shizznit' when it comes to emergency lighting, they are dangerous, and better options exist for all but the most extreme emergency situations. Low power 12V incandescent lamps (#161, #194, #168, #901/#516, #7219, etc.) can be used for low level lighting where candles would be used, but are much safer and more controllable. Brighter 12V incandescent lamps (#923, #921, #93, #1003, #1141, #1156, etc.) can be used for area lighting, as can 12V fluorescent lamps and 120V fluorescent lamps or GLS/halogen incandescent lamps. While oil lights and lanterns can be used for area lighting, they are fragile, give off fumes and are a fire hazard, especially in an emergency situation or with pets/small children thrown in the mix. Candles are also very dim individually, and loads of them are required for any substantial amount of light (old candle chandeliers didn't use lots of them just for show).
